Problem Overview

Middle Township High School serves approximately 760 students in a diverse community. Like many schools, we continue to address challenges related to student engagement, school connectedness, and family involvement. Student surveys and staff observations indicated that many students desired greater recognition for their accomplishments and more opportunities to feel connected to their school community. In addition, the school sought new ways to engage families and celebrate the diverse cultures represented within our student population.

Program/Activity Description

Through funding provided by the AtlantiCare Healthy Schools Grant Program, Middle Township High School implemented several initiatives designed to strengthen school climate and increase student engagement. The largest initiative was our Multicultural Night, held during the 2025-2026 school year, which brought together students, families, staff members, and community partners to celebrate the cultures represented throughout our school community. Grant funds were used to support event materials and activities that encouraged participation from families and students. Additional grant funds were used to purchase professional display frames that now permanently showcase our Student of the Month recipients and highlight student involvement in athletics, clubs, academic programs, performing arts, and school events. These displays were installed in highly visible areas of the school and have become a focal point for students, staff, and visitors.

Program Activity Outcomes

As a result of participating in these initiatives, student recognition has become a more visible and celebrated part of school culture. The Multicultural Night attracted hundreds of attendees and provided meaningful opportunities for families to connect with the school and one another. Students reported feeling proud to share their cultural traditions and appreciated seeing their families engaged in school activities. The recognition displays have had an unexpected positive impact on student engagement. Students frequently stop to view the displays and actively seek opportunities to participate in school activities in hopes of being featured. Throughout the school year, dozens of students were recognized through the Student of the Month program, while more were highlighted through photographs showcasing student life and achievement. These efforts have strengthened school pride and created a lasting visual celebration of student success.

Conclusion

The AtlantiCare Healthy Schools Grant allowed Middle Township High School to make strategic, sustainable investments that continue to benefit students and families long after the initial funding period. By creating opportunities for meaningful family engagement and establishing permanent recognition displays, the school has strengthened student connectedness, increased participation in school activities, and fostered a more positive school climate. These initiatives will remain in place for years to come and serve as a model for other schools seeking cost-effective ways to build community and celebrate student success.
